Climate Change and Students’ Role

berwarna.jpg

Pertanyaannya bukan lagi apakah pemanasan global benar-benar terjadi, tetapi apakah dalam menghadapi situasi darurat ini, kita dapat cepat menyesuaikan diri” Kofi Annan 2006.

Climate Change, nowadays, really tickles many people’s mind deeply. They, who take different role in society structure, have their own idea about what actually climate change is. They showed their concentration on it and promoted how to reduce climate change. But on the other side, there are still people who criticize it. Is climate change really happening?

Yes. Climate change is real and happening now!

Well actually, climate is always changing through time and space. Started from the first time that earth was formed, the climate has been conditioning to the balance and suitable atmosphere for living.

The problem right now is that it is changing more rapidly than before and most of them, this era, were indicated as the effect of human activities. This rapid and big scale changing will affect all aspect of living creature on the earth.  Earth’s temperature will continuously increase if we don’t take any action to prevent it by now.

Since around 1800’s, earth’s mean temperature had been increased 0.74 C. It is predicted that the temperature will increase around 1.80 C to 4 C on the 2011’s. During last 30 years, earth’s mean temperature had been temperature 0.06 C. 2006 is recorded as the hottest year of all.

As a student, we also have a role to take, which couldn’t replace by anyone. But not many students considered with this special role. So tell us, do u care with climate change? What can you do to fulfill the role?

Star Observing

hei hei hei

akirnya kepikiran deh buat bikin acara saat sejam mati lampu…

akirnya ide buat neliti bintang muncul dr uthi, kebetulan uthi ada peta bintang, dan akhirnya kita pinjem dah tropong bintangnya lab instrumen (tapi belom sempet bilang ke pak bregas he he he maap ye pak)
………… ……… ……… ……… ……… ……… ……… ……… ……… ……… ……… ……… …..

jum’at siang tropong bintangnya ude ada ditangan….

singkat cerita lagiiii…..
(kpanjangan klo dicritaain)
akirnya kita diperbolehkan gabung / ikutan ke acara mereka. acaranya dimulai dr jam 22:00 – 07:00. sebagian besar sih anak ICSF ga bisa ikut ampe pagi. Yang ikutan kemaren (daniel, rahmi sama neny) klo ga salah he he he
ternyata di acara
star party tersebut mereka semua bisa liat saturnus, rasi bintang centaurus, sama rasi bintang crux…..

waaaa…sayaaang ga bisa ikuuuT….

INTINYA
1. kita seneeeng…dapet temen2 baruu….(banyak lagi)
2. kita dikasih kenang-kenangan sama HAAJ berupa peta bintang
3.

KEREN dah pokoknya malam minggu kemarin…

Selamat berkreativitas..!!!

Salam,

Paper Recycling Workshop

dsc00644

Dear ICSF fella…

At Saturday 31 Jan 09, we’ve just tried to make the recycling paper.. i’m so thankful for the participants.. though i’m not an expert in recycling paper, but i’ve tried to share my skill through this workshop..

Because lack of equipments, i tried to substituted those things with many kinds of economic household tools… hehehe… it was quite worked!!

Actually this workshop was still on the trial phase… so i hope all the participants could understand if the results are not totally succesful yet… gomen ne..

Mmm… maybe you wanna know every steps to make this recycled paper… it’s quite simple… u just need to break the newspaper by cutting it into very small pieces n soak it at least one night. Then leach it, and put a small amount of the pulp on the rag, press it with the glass bottle till it becomes a really thin sheet.. let the rag covered up the sheet and let it dry by the sun heat.. Voila, you did it..!!

dsc00656 dsc00653 dsc006581 dsc00652 dsc00667

So… from the workshop, we’ve produced several sheets of recycling paper… it’s good enough for the amateur like us I guess… hehe.. after dried up by days [?] we could see that (still) there’re missing techniques.. but that’s the way we learn something, right? we found the mistake, then try to fix it… without that, we’ll never know the hurdle, n we’ll never know how much energy that we have to spend just for making papers… ^.^

overall, all of the participants have done a great work..!!
I was so glad to see your spirit at this workshop… can’t wait to do another activity…!

Regards,

Conferences, Campaigns, and Simple Life Style for Climate Change

Everyone in the world has taken part in climate change issues. All people from different backgrounds talk about this problem; scientists, politicians, economists, students, and even housewives. But the fact is that, with all the people involved, it still did not give a real impact on climate change.

Country leaders from each country have had plenty conferences specifically talking about climate change which began in 1990, named UNFCCC (United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change). Every country leaders and delegates gather in a country that hosts the conference. The activists also conduct various campaigns to oppose the increase and terrible impacts of climate change. They would perform various campaigns in the streets, handing out flyers, hang posters, and others.

But do they realize how much energy was spent for those activities? How much fuel was burned when every country leaders fly on their private planes? How much fuels were spent to run every presidential car and their sixteen presidential bodyguard cars? How many papers and chemicals are wasted to print posters? How much fuel is burned to produce the papers used for flyers? And even if we use recycled papers, it takes more energy to be produced compared to the manufacture of new papers.

I feel that, conferences conducted since tens of years ago and the campaigns that are very often spoke by everyone, anywhere, and all the time are not very effective in making impacts to reduce the worst effects of climate change. In fact they only waste more energy, compared to doing nothing, they might save energy.

Actually, congress and the campaigns are not required if we are aware of the exact problems. In fact, from year to year, we never really know the results of each congress, and feel the real impact from them. They are slow. Therefore, it would be better if we can act locally but think globally at the same time, rather than doing a global action which can’t be applied in our respective countries.

I believe, the root cause of climate change is human activities where individuals practice overconsumption lifestyles. I think the anti overconsumption action and holding the principle of simple living is the solution to all the problems. If we buy just enough clothes for us to wear, then companies do not need to produce so much clothes to meet our demanding needs, therefore, there won’t be so much fuels needed to run production machines which emits carbon

If only we do not buy too many goods, then plastic companies do not need to manufacture so many plastics just to wrap the goods that we buy, consequently, less fuel would be burned too. Suppose we lead a simple lifestyle, then we do not need to do extra work to earn more money to meet the never ending desires of our lives, and we do not need to use extra vehicles, computers, and air conditioners. All this uses a huge amount of electricity and again, the excessive burning of fuels to cater the generation of electricity.

I know that it is a human nature to always ‘want’ something. But do we really need them? Hence we should know the limits and reduce our over consumption life. This simple thing that we do will definitely be more effective than attending world conferences.

Abstract

Incidence rate of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is associated to the rain season and  tropical lowland areas (Hidayati 2009). Researches which have been working before show that there are significantly relationship between climatic factors and DHF incidence rate. Thus, It is expected that climate elements are able to be used accurately as predictors in arrangement of the DHF incidence prediction model.  Models have been arranged based on  the method of Least Square Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) and statistical stochastic approach. In the model, predictor variables are only consisting of climate information data and incidence rate (IR) of DHF per total population. Validation is analysed to determine the relationship between  the accuracy of model output and actual observations data. Models arrange by using climate information data from Mataram (case study 2010) and results some best prediction models. The first models are arranged by using an IR value a week before prediction point (IRn-1). The prediction  models are IRn = 0.889 IRn-1 + 0.0188 CH3n-4, where the value of P<0.05, R-square (adj) more than 85 %, S = 2.48617, Durbin-Watson statistic = 2.10305 and if temperature data is available another model which can be used is IRn = 0.040 + 0.878 IRn-1 + 0.0206 SD4n-4 where the value of P<0.05, R-square (adj) more than 85 % , S = 2.49535 and Durbin-Watson statistic = 2.10632. The second prediction  models, arrange by using an IR value two weeks earlier (IRn-2). The prediction  models are IRn = 0.789 IRn-2 + 0.0353 CH4n-4 where the value of P<0.05, R-square (adj) more than 75 % , S = 3.23325, Durbin-Watson statistic = 1.09148  and another one is IR = 0.813 IRn-2 + 0.0317 CH3n-4 where the value of P<0.05, R-square (adj) more than 75 %, S = 3.54146, by Durbin-Watson statistic = 1.01878. Validation of the models shows a good value and can be consistently applied in Early Warning Model (EWM), results of the validation of these models respectively are 78%, 79%, 77%, and 77%. EWM is designed by  using a visual  language program and stochastic spread sheet in a crystal ball software. The output models are expected to be useful to anticipate and mitigate DHF incidence rate through the implementation of mosquito eradication and determination of optimum time for fogging activity.
